WhatsApp revealed on Thursday that it has expanded its message pinning feature, allowing users to pin up to three messages in a chat for easier retrieval. Previously, the app permitted pinning a single message at the top of a conversation, whether with an individual or a group.
The announcement was made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp’s chief, Will Cathcart, on their personal WhatsApp Channels. The ability to pin messages in both one-on-one and group chats was initially introduced by WhatsApp in December of the previous year.
The feature supports pinning various types of messages, including texts, images, and polls. Pinning messages can be particularly handy for swiftly accessing important details such as a friend’s address or the location of a planned group event.
To pin a message, users need to press and hold the message and then choose “Pin” from the options. There’s also the flexibility to set how long a message stays pinned—24 hours, 7 days (which is the default setting), or 30 days. This feature is useful for managing pinned messages that may no longer be relevant after a certain period.
However, users cannot pin messages indefinitely; the maximum duration is 30 days, after which a message would have to be re-pinned. An alternative for permanent retention is to “Star” a message, which can then be accessed via the contact information section.
