Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple’s iOS 18 release may be “the biggest” ever. A June WWDC announcement is likely for iOS 18.
“I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates—if not the biggest—in the company’s history,” Gurman said in his monthly Power On newsletter. “With that knowledge, Apple’s June developers conference should be exciting.”
A few months before, Gurman wrote that Apple wanted iOS 18 to be its most “ambitious and compelling” version in years.
Gurman has previously stated that Apple will debut a new Siri with a new AI engine. New Siri and Messages tools to auto-complete phrases and answer inquiries are also planned. Spotify added auto-generated playlists last year, and Apple Music should too.
Apple may integrate generative AI into Xcode to help developers design new apps faster. Apple’s Pages and Keynotes should also get generative AI improvements.
iOS 18 may enable RCS since Apple announced in November that it will add support in 2024. Apple stated it believes “RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS.” The dramatic shift follows public pressure on Apple to adopt RCS on iPhones. Apple aims to implement RCS, but it has confirmed that Android-to-iPhone messages would still be displayed as green bubbles.
As we approach iOS 18’s formal launch four months away, we may discover more about the software upgrade.
