A recent survey conducted by Monmouth University and released on Wednesday reveals that a concerning proportion of Americans—18% to be exact—subscribe to the notion of “a covert government effort involving Taylor Swift to assist Joe Biden in winning the presidential election.” Eighteen percent! While it’s true that 73% of respondents do not believe in the existence of this clandestine effort (with 9% responding “don’t know”), the fact that 18% do is considerably higher than what one would expect in a rational society. This poll underscores the unsettling reality that our society may not be as rational as we’d hope.
“The purported conspiracy theory involving Taylor Swift’s involvement in swaying the election holds traction among a significant number of Trump supporters. Even individuals who were previously unaware of this theory found it credible upon being polled. Welcome to the 2024 election,” remarked Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, on Wednesday.
