OpenAI has acquired the domain Chat.com, adding it to its list of prominent web addresses.
As of today, Chat.com now redirects users to OpenAI’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT. OpenAI confirmed the acquisition via an email statement.
Originally registered in September 1996, Chat.com is among the web’s oldest domains. Last year, it was reported that HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah purchased Chat.com for $15.5 million, marking it as one of the top two highest publicly reported domain sales.
In March, Shah revealed he had sold Chat.com to an unnamed buyer. Today, he confirmed on X that OpenAI was the buyer, hinting he received OpenAI shares in the transaction.
The domain hasn’t transferred ownership since last year, suggesting OpenAI is not rebranding ChatGPT under Chat.com.
OpenAI has declined to disclose the purchase price for Chat.com.
