Apple is terminating 614 employees in California following the discontinuation of its electric vehicle initiative. The company issued a WARN notice in California, announcing the layoffs to the impacted workers on March 28, with the layoffs becoming effective on May 27. The notice doesn’t detail the specific projects these employees were involved in, however, Bloomberg has indicated that the majority were part of the now-defunct car project, with some others assigned to a facility dedicated to developing next-generation screen technology.
The company ceased operations on these initiatives by the end of February. Apple’s car project, internally dubbed “Project Titan,” initiated in 2014, was officially declared cancelled to its team on February 27. According to Bloomberg, Apple planned to reassign some of the project’s remaining personnel to work on generative AI projects.
Simultaneously, Apple halted its efforts to create and manufacture its own smartwatch displays, which were intended to be introduced in the Apple Watch before possibly extending to other Apple devices.
The WARN notice identified that the employees affected by these layoffs were stationed across eight locations in Santa Clara County.
As of now, Apple has not provided a comment on the matter.
